December Lion's Club Students of the Month at Spearman High School

The December Lion's Club Students of the Month at Spearman High School are seniors, Natalie Mendoza and Miles Mathews.

Natalie is the daughter of Carlos and Virginia Mendoza. She has one older brother and sister, Angel and Angela Mendoza. Natalie is active in Spanish Club, FCCLA, Student Council, National Honor Society, UIL Academics, basketball, and the student athletic trainer team. Natalie has been listed on the All A Honor Roll throughout high school and has been named the Top Student of the Year in Principles of Health Science, Health Science Theory, and Medical Terminology. She has also received her Texas State Floral Certification and is CPR certified. Natalie is currently a student within the Health Science Program of Study and she will complete her Certified Nursing Assistant Industry Based Certification this year, as well. In her spare time, Natalie enjoys working at the ice cream shop - El Arcoiris. She also enjoys going with her dad to the farm and checking the animals, as well as hanging out with her friends during her free time. Her future plans include attending Amarillo College and majoring in nursing. Natalie's advice to underclassmen is, "Be as independent as you can be because at the end of the day you can only rely on yourself." When asked to describe her senior year in three words she states, "Stressful, fast, and eventful." Natalie's most memorable high school moment as during her junior year when Adamari was chasing Coach Batton with mashed potatoes and Coach Batton was jumping over chairs to get away from her. Natalie's most influential teacher during her school years is Mrs. Deidre Tice.

Miles is the son of Erin Mathews. He was one older sister, Taylor Mathews. While in high school, Miles has been involved in Spearman Lynx football, track, FFA, and Tractor Tech. He has also been involved with Technical Theater and previously pursued the cybersecurity program of study. He has been listed on Honor Roll, was named the 2023 Amarillo Globe News Pre-Season Super Team Offensive Lineman, was named the District 1 3A 2023 First Team All-District Offensive Lineman, and he was named the 2022 Spearman Offensive Lineman of the Year. Miles was also a state qualifier in the FFA Tractor Tech competition, received 1[st] place in the Western Equipment Electrical competition, was the One Act Play District Award Winner for Lead Sound, and was a 2022 Kelly Award nominee for Excellence in Lighting/Projection. He also completed an internship with ProFormance Systems for the Jane-Eyre production. In his spare time, Miles enjoys working on his truck, working on the family ranch, and pursuing cybersecurity interests online. His future plans include attending either Oklahoma State University or Texas Tech University and pursuing a degree in either Agribusiness or Cybersecurity. Miles most memorable high school moment was when the 2022 Spearman Lynx football team went three deep in the playoffs. When asked what he likes best about Spearman Miles replied, "I like the sense of community and the close-knit feeling I get from everyone who supports all of the school activities." The event Miles most looks forward to during the school year is the Snake Dance and the burning of the SHS. Miles most influential teacher during his school years is Mr. Lance Swan and Coach Fongsamouth, who was his football coach/World History teacher during his sophomore year at Timbercreek High School in Keller ISD.
