Spearman, Texas -- In a heartfelt ceremony, the Spearman Fire Department and members of the community gathered to honor Chief Roger Close, who is retiring after decades of dedicated service to Spearman and Hansford County. Known for his deep commitment to the department and his passion for preserving its traditions, Chief Close leaves behind an enduring legacy.
Reflecting on his time in the department, Close expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with a knowledgeable team that valued passing down their expertise. "I got brought up in a group that was knowledgeable and eager to share their knowledge, and I think that's what hooked me -- the learning aspect," he said, attributing his dedication to the foundation set by those before him.
Chief Close also spoke about the sense of responsibility that comes with leading a team, emphasizing the honor he felt daily. "Carrying on a tradition that was set before me was an honor and it is an honor I will miss every day," he shared.
One of Chief Close's most notable achievements was his instrumental efforts in securing a much-needed new fire truck for the department. This acquisition greatly improved the department's ability to serve the community and demonstrated Close's commitment to advancing the fire department's capabilities.
In recognition of his exceptional service, the firefighters honored Chief Close with a large plaque showcasing his years of dedication, which was a custom piece designed to display his fireman's axe, a symbol of his many years of leadership and sacrifice.
Throughout his years of service, Chief Close worked alongside some of the best individuals in the field, a sentiment he made clear in his closing remarks. "There's a really good group of people here, some of the best I've ever worked with. When I stepped out, I felt comfortable knowing I left it in very capable hands," he said.
As the Spearman Fire Department bids farewell to its beloved leader, Close's influence will continue to shape the department for years to come. His retirement leaves behind "big shoes to fill," but his legacy of leadership and dedication will be remembered by all those he worked with and served in the community.
A healthy Hansford County requires great community news.
