Fastest in the Nation — And Still Our Brenen

There are moments in a small town that feel bigger than football. Bigger than Friday nights. Bigger than wins and losses.
Saturday was one of those moments.
I was sitting with Brenen Thompson’s family when the clock stopped at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis — 4.26 seconds in the 40-yard dash — and for a split second the room went quiet before it erupted.
The fastest time at the 2026 NFL Combine.
The fastest in the nation.
And he’s ours.
Brenen is a former Spearman Lynx — a hometown boy who ran around many a windy Panhandle track meet long before he was running on the biggest stage in professional football. Watching that moment with his family, I didn’t see just an NFL prospect. I saw the kid we’ve all watched grow up. I saw the work. The discipline. The humility. The faith.
I consider Brenen one of my kids. That’s what happens in towns like Spearman. We raise them together. We celebrate them together. We worry about them together. And when they shine on a national stage, we feel that pride deeply.
His 4.26-second run didn’t just turn heads — it made history. It places him among the elite speedsters ever to step onto that combine turf. Scouts were buzzing. Analysts were scrambling to check their numbers. Social media lit up.
But if you know Brenen, you know something important:
Speed is just part of the story.
This is a young man who has worked relentlessly for every opportunity. From Spearman High School to the college ranks, he has carried himself with quiet confidence and steady determination. He has never forgotten where he came from.
And that matters.
When that time flashed across the screen on Saturday, I looked around at his family.  I could see their joyas the early mornings, hard practices, setbacks, and sacrifices suddenly collide into one unforgettable moment.
In Spearman, we’ve always known Brenen was fast.  We’ve seen it on the track. We’ve seen it on the football field.   Now the entire country has seen it too.
But what makes me proud isn’t just the 4.26.
It’s his faith that defines his character.
It’s the way he gives credit to his mom.
It’s the way he loves and honors his grandparents. He gets his speed from his grandmother, by the way.
It’s the way he represents Spearman without ever needing to say it out loud.
This accomplishment belongs to him — earned through grit and grace — but it also belongs to this community that helped shape him.
Saturday wasn’t just about a stopwatch.
It was about watching a Spearman Lynx become the fastest man at the NFL Combine — and realizing that no matter how far he runs, he’ll always be one of ours.
Brenen, we are so proud of you.
And Spearman will be cheering you every step of the way.
