There are moments in a small town that everyone remembers.
The first state championship. The first valedictorian from your family. The first time someone from your hometown makes it all the way to the biggest stage in sports.
For Spearman, that moment just became official.
Former Spearman Lynx standout Brenen Thompson has signed his rookie contract with the Los Angeles Chargers, officially completing the team's 2026 draft class and taking another step toward his NFL career. The Chargers announced the signing this week after selecting Thompson in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft with the 105th overall pick.
For football powerhouses in large cities, NFL draft picks may come along every few years. For Spearman, a town of fewer than 3,000 people tucked into the Texas Panhandle, this is history.
To the best of anyone's knowledge, Thompson is the first Spearman High School graduate ever drafted and signed by an NFL team.
And what a journey it has been.
Panhandle football fans first knew Thompson as the blur in purple and white who always seemed to be a step faster than everyone else on the field. That speed carried him from Spearman to the University of Texas, then to Oklahoma, and eventually to Mississippi State, where everything came together during a breakout 2025 season.
Thompson led the SEC in receiving yards with more than 1,000 yards and turned himself into one of the most dangerous deep threats in college football. His blazing 4.26-second 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine only confirmed what people in Spearman had known for years: if Brenen gets a step on you, he's gone.
Now that speed will be on display in the NFL.
According to national reporting, the Chargers drafted Thompson specifically to bring explosive playmaking ability to an offense led by quarterback Justin Herbert. Early reports from minicamp have already generated excitement. Thompson reportedly hauled in a touchdown reception of more than 50 yards and made several eye-catching plays before the team broke for the summer.
Of course, statistics and scouting reports only tell part of the story.
What makes this moment special for Spearman is that so many people have watched Thompson's journey from the beginning. They remember the Friday night lights, the track meets, the Saturday College Game Day watch parties to support him at Texas, Oklahoma, and Mississippi State.
This accomplishment belongs to Brenen, but it also feels like something the entire community gets to celebrate.
Small towns understand something big cities often miss. When one of our kids succeeds, everybody feels a little bit of that success.
Now Spearman will have something new to watch this fall. Every Sunday, somewhere between kickoff and the final whistle, Panhandle eyes will be searching for No. 89 in powder blue.
We'll be the Charger's Fans.
And when Brenen Thompson takes the field for his new team, he'll carry more than a jersey on his back. He'll carry a little piece of Spearman with him.
The dream that started on a small-town football field has officially reached the NFL.
And Spearman couldn't be prouder.

A healthy Hansford County requires great community news.
